I built a computer a few months ago that had XP on it and I am trying to put vista on it. The computer was working fine until I wanted to install and boot vista from the sata drive. When installing window’s vista it only picks up my IDE drives as available to install the OS. So I checked in BIOS and changed the settings for the sata controller to IDE instead of Raid. So now, unlike before, Bios lists the sata drives as present with their respective capacities- ie 500GB and 250GB. Everything looks good in the bios so I put the disk in to install vista, and right after it says installing files, I get a blue screen that says “machine check exception” and that windows stopped to avoid damage to the system. If I change the settings for the sata controller on the mother board back to Raid instead of IDE, everything works fine. But the sata drives are still not seen by the windows installation program. Could it have anything to do with master or primary settings for the drives? In bios is lists the ide as IDE0 = master
IDE1 =slave
IDE2 -dvdrom master
IDE3 (sata drive,- master)
IDE4 (sata drive- master
I tried doing “load drivers” at the installation promt, I’ve put in the cd for the motherboard, and the cds for the disk drives but it says there are no drivers.
I’ve been looking around for answers and sae soemthing about disabling AHCI but I don’t remember seeing that on my bios and then another mention of sata+pata but I don’t recall seeing that either…
Am I missing somethign obvious- maybe? All I want is install windows vista on the 250GB sata drive and use the other sata drive and 2 ide- ata drives as storage.
