Windows will not install

By Red Dragoon ·
HP Omnibook Xe4100 with XP HE. will not install any version of Windows. one day it just quit working. She did not recently install any programs, but when she'd start it up she would receive a Stop error. I ran different memory checkers and none reported problems. tried using the HP Recovery cds, but when it got to about 15%, it said that the Image File was corrupt and the computer would shut down. I tried repartitioning the hard drive and formatting it with both FAT and NTFS. I have also tried running a serious hard drive utility. No errors were found. erased the master boot record. I tried installing Windows 98. but Explorer kept crashing because of kernel32.dll. I tried then upgrading to Win2000. it got to the screen where it said 'Starting Windows', but then it said ntoskrnl.exe was missing or corrupt. So I restored that file. Then it did the same thing and said some other file was missing or corrupt. booted from 2000 or XP cd - was copying files - it would stop and say that file "x" could not be copied. it would say that the file is either invalid or corrupt...The Cd may be damaged. I used two different copies of XP, one was brand-new. certain features of the BIOS are not available. cannot disable drivers. STOP errors - IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and ntfs.sys. The only thing I have not done is replace the cd-rom drive. I don't think this is the problem.

Windows will not install

I know that you have tested the RAM, I would still try changing out the RAM.

If that does not correct the problem (I suspect that it won't) I vote for a bad system-board.

With the sudden onset of the problem, and all that you have done to makethe PC boot up, I can only draw the one conclusion that you do not want to hear. Either the CPU itself, or a connection on the system-board has failed.

I agree with Chas this looks like a major hardware problem with the RAM, motherboard, CPU or HDD. Any PC should load a new copy of any WIndows program to a newly formatted HDD unless there is a major hardwrae problem, and you have stated that you tried a new copy of Windows onto a reformatted HDD.

One other possible esoteric cause, a veeeery looong shot but worth a try. Open the machine and unplug and replug every cable and device, also examine the cables for minor damge. It is just possiblethat something may have been jarred loose recently and is making only a partial connection.

Looking very bad friend!
Before I replaced anything though, I would try reseating the RAM, resetting the BIOS defaults and running a low-level format on the hard drive before attmpting to reinstall windows.
