Windows will not remember passwords

By bandcee ·
How does one reconfigure settings to allow windows to remember passwords. Sometimes the dialog window "do you want windows to remember this Password" is gray. Other times I can check yes but it still won't remember the password. It remembers my ISP username but not the password nor any other login that I've entered for subscribed sites.

It has been my experience that if you have your system set to use multiple user profiles, Windows will not allow you to sve your passwords. By eliminating the profiles, the grayed-out checkbox will go away. Good luck.

From inside Windows go to a MS-DOS Session by clicking on the MS-DOS icon in the Programs Listing (Start, Programs, MS-DOS) or go to Start, Run and type "Command" and then click OK.

Once in the DOS box you will be already in the c:\Windows\Desktop> prompt. At that prompt, type del c:\windows\*.pwl and press the Enter key on the keyboard. This will delete the password files from the Windows directory.

After succesfully completing this command, type Exit and hit the Enter key to return to Windows. Now in Windows, click on Start, Log Off [USERNAME] or you don't see that option right above the Shut Down selection, click on ShutDown and then select Log On as Another User and click OK.

After that, you will be prompted for your username and password. Type whatever you want as username and leave the password blank, click OK. You will asked to confirm the password in another dialog box. Leave both fields blank and click OK. DONE! Now you can save your ISP password after successfully connecting at least once.

If you are talking about Internet Explorer, in 5.5 you can go to Tools --> Internet Options --> AutoComplete... --> and Use Autocomplete for Web addresses, and User names and password on forms and Prompt me to save passwords.

is there a "network neighborhood" icon on the desktop? usually without it windows will not
remebmer passwords for the ISP. if you don't have it, blowout the modem and tcp/ip, shutdown and restart then reinstall modem and network settings. then theicon should be visible, and the password save will work.
