Windows won't recognize printer

By viortiz ·
Windows 95 won't recognize a printer. This printer has been used for a few years in this Win 95 system. Last week, out the blue, it stopped working. Thinking the printer was broken, I installed the printer on another computer (Win98SE), and it works fine. But when it is installed on this Win 95 computer, it won't work. I updated the printer drivers and no luck. The message is the no communication printer error message.

My next step is to upgrade this pc to Win98, since I'm guessing there's a problem with the operating system. If that doesn't work, then I will assume there's a problem with the parallel port. Does anyone have any other ideas on what the problem could be? How can I test the parallel port besides trying to attach a different printer to it? Thanks.

In your bios try changing the designation for the parallel port.Your options are usually Bi-directional, EPP/ECP, and Normal. Whatever it is set to now try changing it to something else and see if that works.

Check device manager for a possible problem with the printer port. Also, check to see how the port is configured. The configuration could have somehow changed. Make sure it shows up as ECP Printer Port. If not, click on the port to highlight it in device manager, and remove. Then reboot and enter BIOS setup, change the config to ECP port, save and reboot. Windows should detect this setting and reinstall the port. Hope this helps.

At your dos prompt, type in ( without the parentheses ) "copy con dir *.* >lpt1

If the port has a hardware failure, the printer will not print, if it prints in this
most basic text mode, then it's a windows/driver problem.

Before you install Win98 try changing the actual cable running between your computer and the printer. It might be just that simple.

Good Luck
