By johnson-clayton ·
Windows XP running on desktop. Everytime I try to update internet or anything windows update wise, I'm told by windows update needs ActiveX loaded to work. I do the procedure and still get the error.

Open IE.

Click on Tools, Internet Options.

Click on the security tab.

Click the Custom Level Button.

Here is how I have my ActiveX controls set:

Automatic Prompting:
Enable

Binary and script:
Enable

Download signed ActiveX controls:
Prompt

Download unsigned ActiveX controls:
Prompt

Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe:
Disable

Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins:
Enable

Script ActiveX controls marked safe:
Prompt

If you changed any settings, click Okay, twice.

Most of the Enables can be set to prompt for higher security.

Make sure that your firewall and anti-virus software are set to allow ActiveX controls and Internet access to Microsoft and Windows Update.

clayton do as chas told you and you are a sitting duck to all attacks . Activate your active x step by step . Only after a deep virus and spyware scan and cleaning . see which setting solves it . then go ahead and do your firewall/antivirus and anti spyware settings one by one . don't open all fences at once .

Or you can open it momentarily like Chas mentions and then close it again (set it back to where you had it).... however, I would definitely run a virus scan and a spyware scan first.

I've made the modification suggested but still can not download updates also when I go to my homepage buttons and pictures are not showed just a square with a red X in place of the buttons and pictures. Also I notice that ACTIVE X is not listed on the program list in Add/Remove Programs anymore.

clayton you rejected all of us ! then you must reject your XP installation . Reinstall you machine from scratch . Take it away and put it to another network somewhere else. Or connect to the internet from dial up. see if you get pictures shown . then take it to your lan and connect it and do the security configurations one by one after taking notes each time . see where you get X in place of pictures . then move from there ..
