Windows xp and 2000 hangs on installing

Trying to install Windows XP or windows 2000 on a computer. They both stop responding at the same place setup is now starting windows. I had windows 98 on it before. HELP

Also, this is before the install is completed or on first install after files are copied & rebooted?

I'd suggest you run a diagnostic on your hard drive & ram, too.

Check the Hardware Compatibility List(HCL). I bet that you have a component that does not have an NT driver on the machine. You need to download the NT drivers. Put them in a Drivers folder at the root of the HD so that the machine can find them.
The drivers might also need to be loaded before the OS - like Motherboard drivers having their own disk that you need to load before the OS.
