Check your CMOS setting. If this is an installation CD, the machine needs to recognize that the CD is a boot choice.

If the CD is not bootable, either your hardware does not support booting from CD, or the CD is defective.

You cannot make an existing CD bootable.

You may be able to create a bootable copy of the CD.
There are several links to bootable CD instructions at www.bootdisk.com

If your goal is to install XP, try the download from Microsoft to create the boot floppy set.

Or, boot off of a W9X setup disk, enable CD-ROM support, and then run setup from the CD.

The CD should be already be "bootable". Enter your CMOS (setup when system first boots)and confirm or set the first boot device to the CD drive.

I have read the other answers. You are rigt - you cannot boot from Windows XP installation CD's. Its a waste off time to try to boot from an windows 9x disk, it will claim that it cannot run in DOS mode.

You should ?download bootdisks from microsoft or www.bootdisk.com.

If things don't work out right, you can always do like I did (the hard way !):
1. I formatted the harddrive
2. I installed win2000 (This one can boot from CD-Rom !)
3. I installed Win XP
