could be a virus sounds like W32.blaster.worm
go to start search type W32.blaster.worm if it is
you will have to go to start run SERVICES.MSC /S
remote procedure call (RPC) recovery tab and change first failure second failure & subsequent failure to restart the service this should stop the PC rebooting go symantec.com and get the the fix tool hope this helps

you could try doing a repair just boot from windows xp cd go all the the way to install
then select repair this will remove old os
and install a new one leaving all files intact

Have you tried this cd on another hdd? It sounds as if your "install cd" is infected with a virus and as soon as the Internet is available, it activates. In which case, I'd not use that cd.

You need to create a boot cd with the latest virus patches copied to it... and you need to obtain an original MS WinXP CD and boot with it (then format the drive and install the OS from it). Once that is done and before connecting the computer to the Internet, run the virus patches from the second cd created beforehand.

This is standard practice since the Welchia and Blaster and SoBig etc. viruses/worms have taken advantage of the MS security oversights.

If the system won't boot, or if it only crashes when connected to the internet, I would geuss either a virus or a device driver problem.

Like Kenny said, I would try to check for the blaster worm (or a variant) and if that was clean, then you might look at your modem drivers.

Hope this helps
Rob
