things to try

by jck In reply to Windows XP don't Start

1) try on boot to see if F8 key gets you to safe mode. it might be a bad driver file that won't load and locks things up

2) try unplugging unnecessary peripherals that might be malfunctioning

3) if all else fails, boot from a floppy/USB/external drive install of the OS and try to see if the drive is even readable.

OR get a copy of your HDD

by OH Smeg In reply to Windows XP don't Start

Makers Testing Utility and test the HDD for correct function. then better still grab yourself a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD from here

Burn it to a CD Blank and insert into the Optical Drive of this computer and if necessary reset the BIOS to Boot off the Optical Drive before the HDD in the BIOS Boot Order. Save the changes when you Exit BIOS and let the system load the Ultimate Boot CD's Menu and test the hardware.

If everything passes you can then set about using the Ultimate Boot CD to repair Windows if you are unable to enter Safe Mode.
