By Finnfan00 ·
I purchased a Compaq Presario 6000 2 weeks ago and it seems like every couple of days my computer freezes up.I have to unplug the computer from it's power source and the plug it back in to restart. Is this a problem with the XP software?

Any number of things can cause a computer to hang. Hardware and software as well as power issues cause lots of problems. First, let's look at software. If you have recently installed any new programs prior to this happening, there may be a conflict. If a program has been removed by any other method than Add/Remove Programs or the program's own uninstall utility, this can cause problems. Perhaps a System Restore may prove beneficial. Select a System Restore point prior to this happening and let Windows restore itself.

I mentioned power. If you have experienced any anomalies such as surges or outages, this can cause hardware to fail. Hopefully you have some sort of surge protection as well as battery backup.

Since you have onlyhad the system 2 weeks, if a factory restore (using the Restore discs that came with the unit) does not resolve, I would recommend returing the unit to the store and exchanging it for a new one.

Good Luck!

Also, if you run your PC 7/24, do you run any CPU intensive programs such as SETI or anything else? Should your CPU get too hot, sometimes it will cause system hangs. Heat can cause a lot of real problems. Ensure your box has plenty of ventilation and not buried under books, papers, etc. and set at least several inches from the wall.

I had this problem with a compaq.
the solution might be to shut off hibernate in the power options in control panel.
Do you shut it off within the 2 days?
Also, when it freezes hold the off button in until it reboots, you should not need to unplug it.
