Tried safe mode or Interactive startup?

by robo_dev In reply to Windows xp hang up on wel ...

Safe mode or Windows interactive startup might help to point out the problem

F5=Safe Mode
Shift+F8= Step-by-step confirmation

Try:
- resetting the BIOS to the factory defaults
- make sure motherboard BIOS version is latest and greatest
- re-seating the memory chips, and trying alternate memory in case you have bad RAM
- Run hard drive diagnostics and make sure 80 wire IDE cables are being used
- Swap video cards, and/or try using onboard video, if your motherboard has it.

As this is a ECS M'Board

by OH Smeg In reply to Windows xp hang up on wel ...

I would first be testing it with something like the Ultimate Boot CD to make sure that everything is working correctly before doing anything more. ECS has a reputation of being unreliable and as the Ultimate Boot CD is a free Boot Disc try it first before doing anything further.

The things to test are the RAM, CPU, and Video as well as the HDD.

System shuts down after XP welcome screen-P4M800-M Motherboard

by rumseycw In reply to Windows xp hang up on wel ...

I had the same problem and guest what I found. There was a bunch of dust in under and around my processor. The motherboards heat protection was causing my system to shutdown, not the XP OS.

I used a paint brush and an air can duster to clean out all the dust! Everything worked well after that.
