Using a Dell 1150 with WinXP. After what may have been an ill-timed powerdown during start up, I got an error of an unmountable boot volume and followed instrucitons found in a third-party help forum and did the following:
1) rebooted with the CD into Recovery Console.
2) ran fixmbr – nothing seemed to happen
3) ran fixboot – again nothing seemed to happen.
Dispairing, I looked it up on Microsoft.com’s troubleshooting and did the following:
1) CD boot into Recovery module
2) ran chkdsk /r who found errors and fixd them
This resulted in:
unable to locate KERNEL32.DLL error
Agian to MS help and:
1) Recovery Console
2) chose c:\Windows installation to log into
3) cd system32
4) ren kernel32.dll kernel32.old
and got: The system cannot find the file or directory specified
5) the MAP command resulted in:
? FAT16 39 MB \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1
c: NTFS 25753MB \Device\Harddisk0\Partition2
e: FAT32 2816MD \Device\HArddisk0\Partition3
d: \Device\CdRom0
All I want to do is be able to reboot the system and copy my personal files to CD (I have a new system on order)at the least, restore the system to running condition @ best. I am going to stop stumbling around in the dark and hope to get some help here.
Any and all help is appreciated.
PS: I even tried to F8 the system @ atart up and chose last known working configuration. Didn’t do squat.
If it helps, I have kept the Windows XP updated and have been regularly using McAfee Anti-virus to keep the system as clean as possible.
