Windows XP Home locks up returning to the welcome screen

By fred ·
I have a system running Windows XP Home, when
you manually swith users or it automatically
switches back to the welcome screen, the system
locks up about 25% of the time. The mouse still
works, but no selections on the welcome screen
will highlight or activate. It happens with or
without hibernation turned on. No system errors.
My guess is the nvidia driver because it usually
happens after someone has used the system for
gaming and I have had lots of other issues with
the nvidia driver. Anyone have any suggestions?
Yes switching to an ATI card instead is on my
list of possibilities. Thanks -- fred.

Same symptoms

I have a customer with the same problem. Only this is a librarian's computer, no gaming here. I believe it has an nvidia card but I'll check the next time I'm there. I've only seen it happen once. There are two users defined. If you click on a username (mouse does work here) the box for the password appears but there is no cursor in the box and you can't time anything in it. only solution is to reboot computer. I've also asked her to try ctl-del-del to get the classic login box but I haven't heard back yet.
