Windows XP Home logon

By OnTheRopes ·
After restarting their pc following a recent Windows update on an XP Home stand-alone pc the user is asked for their password to join a Domain in their Admin. account. This pc was never part of a Domain and their password doesn?t work. They can?t logon using their Limited account logon either. Please help.

Start by booting into safe mode and taking a look at the user accounts. I have never seen a stand alone pc suddently ask to join a domain before so if you get a better suggestion, run with it. The Windows update has (infrequently) wanted to see my product key but that is intermittent. I have seen a password suddenly populate- the safe mode dodge will show you if that is the problem. Good luck!

Was a customer emergency that they just brought over 10 minutes after I posted. Masters thesis due this Friday on a pc that wouldn't boot. It will boot into safe mode which will suffice for them until I get my cast removed and can think straight. I really appreciate your quick response.
Thank you.

XP Home can not join a domian... Hmmm, try a blank password. Try safe mode and do a system restore before the latest updates were applied. And as always, backup your data.

Good luck!
