Windows XP Logon Hangs after a while

by bill . Updated 21 years, 4 months ago

Hello,

I have a Windows XP Pro machine that developed a problem within the past 6 months where the login will hang and not complete after the system has locked the screen. This appeared to happen after installing a remote access product from logmein.com. Basically, the program operates like the remote desktop but works through a proxy so your PC is not on the open network available for any hacker to try and login.

The computer can be up and running for days and then gets into a state where you can’t login. You click on the user, enter the password, it attempts to login but the system is locked up at that point from a UI perspective.

I can however telnet in (I know, telnet is not secure) and run applications, see the processes that are running, etc. I am usually able to reboot the machine via shutdown -f -r over telnet but not always.

I am trying to figure out how to debug this without reinstalling XP as a brute force method.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.
