i am guessing you are on a LAN and suggest you contact your network administrator to verify your local login privledges?

It might be a corrupt user.dat file. Or it could be a startup service that is failing (like winlogon). try doing a system restore, or a recovery from the XP disk. Afterwards, scan for virus.

Try booting into safe mode and as soon as you can do anything quckly run stinger, sounds like you have a virus. Stinger runs really quick and you may be able to have just enough time to run stinger befor it reboots again. You will be able to download this program on a floppy, so download it on the floppy than be ready to run it when it comes up.

WIndows XP logs off as soon as i login

by narasimhulu In reply to WIndows XP logs off as so ...

Hey ,
i had the exact problem after uninstalling the annoying Search Assistant update (Windows SA) because i found it a pain. The network and everything runs in the background, but logging in makes it log off again! Anyway, i found the fix on another forum!!!

Windows SA replaces userinit.exe used in logon with its own wsaupdater.exe. But uninstalling doesn't revert it back.

some adaware programs may also remove or quarantine wsaupdater.exe thinking that it's harmful.

1. Boot using your winxp cd.
2. Enter recovery console.
3. at the command prompt go to

4. next type:

copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

5. exit and reboot normally. You should now be able to logon. But you're not done yet!

6. run regedit

7. find the Userinit key in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

8. modify the entry:

so that it reads:

That should do the trick! no reinstalling windows required!

8. modify the entry:

so that it reads:

** Make sure you have the comma!

I have completed steps 1-4.
I type command - copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe and it states 1 file copied.
I then exit and reboot, but the problem is still occuring.

The moment it logs me in, it logs me out !
