Windows XP, Office 2003 Microsoft Word authenticate

by kbuff . Updated 19 years, 5 months ago

I was trying to retrieve Office 2003 word processing files when I started getting screens that said the files had been recovered and told me to choose which files I wanted. When I tried to choose a file, things cancelled and went back to the list of files in the folder. Several times more, I got a window telling me that a program was preparing to install. Those windows also disappeared. Twice I got a window calling for my code key. I wondered if the “Microsoft Updates” included some type of hacker-like authentication cookie. I went to the control panel and tried to delete the latest “security” download. That process gave me windows that I needed the original disk. I have no problem with paying for programs or downloads as needed but when I get my PAST files locked up, until I PROVE that I have paid for the program use, I become very angry. If someone sends me an email or if opening a file triggers a notice to prove authentication of future files will be locked, it?s fair. To do what appears to have been done may be legal on Microsoft’s part but it certainly isn’t ethical or good business. It took me two days to find the original disk and code key in boxes in storage. When I went to try to open a file to put in the code key, the file opened as it has for the last several years. How long will this last? Did Microsoft reconsider and withdraw the authentication program? Does anyone know WHAT IS GOING ON? If I can?t count on access to my word processing files, I can?t operate and I may need to find an alternative to Microsoft. I don?t want to do that because I think Word is the best and really like it. Thank you to anyone who can explain what is happening.
