Windows XP or Vista?

By jardinier ·
In a promotional blurb for Windows 7, it was stated that more copies of Vista had been sold than XP. Given the initial strong consumer resistance to Vista, and knowing that many people like myself still use XP, I find this hard to believe.

Is Microsoft telling the truth?

Could be, in a manner of speaking

If you take every new system sold that had a Vista license (regardless of the fact that many were downgraded to XP), and then count the enterprise licensing agreements in a certain way, then yes, you could probably make a case for Vista being the 'most sold' version of Windows to date.

I wouldn't say it was fully honest, but I couldn't say it was dishonest, either.

Also, EDITED

MS may be counting Vista licenses sold to vendors for systems that haven't shipped yet (EDITED - or ordered yet, or even built yet).

The real question isn't how many have been sold, it's what's running out there.
