Windows XP Peer to Peer Networking

I want to setup a Peer to Peer Networking from a Laptop to Desktop, both are running Windows XP Home version. Desktop setup as Host and Laptop as Guest using Parallel port with straight through cable and Null Modem. Both machines setup as per Microsoft documentation. It does not work. message reads unable to connect. Turned off passwords. What have I not done to make this work?
