Windows XP Pro Networking

By dliby1 ·
I am adding a Windows XP Pro computer to a small Windows 2000 Pro network. The three Windows 2000 computers can see the Windows XP computer, but the XP cannot see the 2000 computers. Any ideas on what to check?

Set up the 2000 machines as Users on the XP machine.

I assume that this is a peer2peer network. If so the first thing to check is the Workgroup name and settings. I have found that not all MS operating systems treat this info the same, when you enter the Workgroup name most display it as if it was typed in capitals regardless of the how it was typed in. Some MS O/S will store this information in the case that it was typed, some will convert to upper case and store; some will compare as if all were upper case, some will compare as it was typed. To overcome this confusion I have found that typing the Workgroup name in in upper case is the only way to ensure that they are all using the exact same workgroup name computers see Name NAME name as 3 different identities.

When a cross O/S problem occurs the first thing I do is go around each machine and change the Workgroup name by retyping it in in upper case, about 70% of the time this fixes the problem.

Checking and resetting the IP address info and mask data will further correct 20% of such problems.

Also Win XP will not see a computer unless it has a folder or drive shared that it can access, thus it must be shared with a security permission and access that the Win XP system can use (the 'Everybody' permission is commonly used). And having a user ID on the other machines for the user on the WinXP machine with the same password often fixes the problem as well.
