Windows XP ( Pro VS Home Edition)

By rscr456 ·
What is the difference between Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition?. I just received a Genuine Windows XP home edition copy. Right now I am using another copy of Windows XP Professional but it is giving me alot of headache when it comes to updates etc..Especially when i installed SP2 and got that warning from Microsoft as to the authenticity of the copy i am using and i had to restore it back to where it was before the last update. I have alot of applications and i am afraid that some of them might not work under the home edition.Could an expert enlighten me ?.
I am not running an enterprise, I am just using some graphical software like AutoCAD and some software that does analysis and deals with complex calculations.

One of the big differences between the two is the lack of access control lists on the folders and files. You do have a limited version of this as the option to make your "My Documents" Folder viewable by only you.

As far as not working with AutoCAD, Autodesk's website states that even their latest version is designed for both XP Pro and Home. I have used home since I bought my computer, and I really haven't found too many apps that dont run.

The only one that sticks with me that doesn't run is VMWare, but that's understandable. :)

Hope that helps, and I think running a "non legit" copy of XP Pro is more trouble than it's worth.

With Pro you have some better Search Features and slightly better Security but the main difference is that with Pro you can join it to a Domain and with Home you can't.

Also if you are using a Peer to Peer Network the upper limit of concurrent connections allowed with Home is 5 where as with Pro it's 10.

Otherwise there isn't much of a difference for the average Home User.

But if you have a genuine Copy of Pro you can ring MS and read them the numbers off the inner ring of the CD and they will e-mail you a replacement Product Key in 7 to 10 working days which you can use Key-finder to change. MS will also send you a manual Registry Hack to do this but Key finder is much faster and fr easier.

My two cents worth.
Home edition has a limited secedit and if you ever get a virus or serious malware your security will not allow you to do anything other than format and re-install.
Home edition MS support also expires long before Pro.
Get you Pro legal and stick with SP2

Applications will work just as well on XP Home as on XP Pro.
Updates and patches should work equally on both.
XP Pro gives you access to Domains, IIS web server, NTFS security properties, and Remote Desktop are the main differences.
I wouldn't worry about your apps, they will work on both.
