Windows XP Prof on a NT 4.0 network

By jsarinana ·
We have a NT network and run about 30 Windows 2000 SP2 clients and 10 Windows 98 clients. We are on a network with 5 NT servers and 5 Quantum Snap servers. Question I'm thinking of bringing in a Windows XP Prof. client on my next workstation purchase. We are a Civil engineering firm that use highend workstations and severl CAD applications which all are certified to run on XP. Any suggestions that I should look out for when adding a Windows XP client to my Domain ?

I will preface this by saying that I have not personally added a WinXP client to a domain, however, people that I know who have stated that it is no big deal, and quite similar to adding a Win2k Pro client.

Adding the XP Pro client is EXACTLY the same as adding the Win2K client. I have an NT 4 domain in a test lab with 9x, 2k, NT4, and XP clients and they all play well together.

A couple things to watch out for are protocols. WinXP doesn't support Netbeui so make sure you don't need that. Also, if the XP machine is going to share files make sure the built in firwall is turned off, this will block file and print share requests if it's not

We are running 3 NT 4.0 Servers. (1 is a terminal server) We have installed 7 XP professional laptops and desktops and have not had any problems. We have found that they are easier to configure than most of the win98 boxes.
