Windows XP Professional very slow

By Naleen ·
We have 2 XP professional PCs and they are painfully slow. We've only bought it last year and it has 1.7 ghz processors and P3 but can't do anything quickly. Please advise if there's anything I can do to make it faster?

If not, will it be a good idea to format it back to factory settings and will there be any complications? Please, please advise us on this issue.

1). Disable any unwanted startup or background-running programs (Start | Run and type "MSCONFIG" without the quotes and click on STARTUP. Uncheck programs that you do not need.)

2). Have at least 256MB RAM.

3). Defrag (in Safe Mode).

how much memory does each machine have?

Also, try clearing out any temp files. Also, delete all the files in c:\windows\prefetch directory. It's similar to a cache directory in XP. Defragment your hard drive. Also make note of what programs you have in the background.

As for speed, 99% of the time more memory improves the speed. If you have 128 MB, I recommend upgrading to 256 or higher. If it's still slow, you can also try moving the page file to a different partition, if you havemore than one.

let me know if you have any other questions.
