Windows XP restarts on it's own

By tarnold790 ·
The computer turns off; however, in the morning, it is rebooted. Hibernation and power settings are disabled. What is causing the reboot?

Its turning on by itself after you've turned it off? Unplug it from the wall outlet? Are you sure its fully off. A little more info will help.

Go to the registry and do a search for "PowerdownAfterShutdown" and change the setting from "1" to "0" or vice-versa. I do not recall if it should be a 1 or 0, but whatever it is, put it at the other.

You might want to go into the BIOS on startup, locate the 'Power setup' area and disable anything that starts the system other than maybe a jiggle from the mouse or keyboard.

You may find your 'modem' set to start the machine, if so, do a thorough search for viruses or trojans if the startup has been coming from the internet.

Some od the Dell BIOS's have a setting to wake the computer at a set time of day.
