Windows XP Setup

By MikeKing23 ·
I have a computer that was supposed to be XP ready. It even came with a rebate for xp so I only had to pay shipping. I ran the compatability checker and wham! Modem and 3D card drivers will not work with XP. I checked the modem manufacturer (PC-Tel) and the driver will not be available until late 2001 (which I thouht it was!!) and the 3d card is intel but I can't find the model on their site. Tech support said "Oh just try installing XP everything should be fine." Is this good advise? IfI install it and my modem doesn't work I can't activate it online or download the drivers for it afterwards! My question is should I cross my fingers and try or wait months until all the drivers are ready?

No this is not good advice, you will be without service and you cannot activate XP,you will get continous actvation screens
The computer is new and it was specifically stated that it was XP ready and so the manufacturer that built the system should be responsible for any parts that are not compatible,go to the manufacturer and demand that they install a compatible modem and 3D card driver. The contract said XP ready true, but it should also cover the parts also.

Thanks for the help. It's really frustrating to get this thing running. I'm not all that excited about xp but for free, I thought why not! A little experience under the belt never hurts!

If the modem and 3D card has drivers for Windows 2000 that is what you need to use.

If there are not Windows 2000 drivers for that hardware, bring the computer back!

They said it was XP ready!

Thanks, very good point. No they weren't even 2000 drivers!! I wish there was a way to split the points but I don't an option for it anywhere. I would have split it in half but oh well, thanks!
