Windows XP shutdown issue

By dwaind ·
When I select shutdown, the pc restarts instead
of shutting completely down. It's on Windows
XP home edition. Is there a setting somewhere
that got changed?

Thanks
Dwain

If the Microsoft links in the previous answer do not correct your problem, there is a good XP shut-down trouble-shooting guide posted at www.aumha.org

Like W98, XP shutdown problems are often related to problems with device drivers.

I have personally experianced hardware combinations that do not shut-down properly under XP.

In many cases, it can be a particular device. Perhaps removing your devices one by one from the Device Manager and rebooting to see which one is causing the issue. Once your system shuts down properly, then you have the troubled device. If you have a legacy device, it could very well be that. Just to ensure it's the hardware and not the drivers, reinstall the drivers and see what happens. I had a legacy modem go bad on me, as I found out by the process of elimination I described.

Good luck!

If you recently loaded Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 then the issue is a problem with their software. It will continually reboot your machine until you pull your hair out. Try going to:
