Windows XP SP2 – USB not functioning correctly

Hi.

I have an IBM R30 Laptop here which was recently upgraded from windows 2000 to XP Pro, SP2. It has all the latest updates installed, and afaik no viruses or spyware.

Now, the USB was working fine in 2000, but since going to XP Pro, the USB will recognise a Micro$oft Intellimouse, but when the USB Printer is plugged in, it has problems, but more importantly USB Mass Storage devices will not work. XP Pro picks them up via plug and pray, installs them, but does not assign them drive letters. I go into Computer Management, use the storage plugin and assign a drive letter to the usb key (RunDisk) and it says it is formatted as FAT32 and abled to be accessed through drive letter -whatever-. Go into My Computer, no usb key/drive and if I try to access through Computer Management and open through there, it will open. HOWEVER if I try and run it as a drive letter, for example ‘e:\’, it bombs out and tells me there is no action associated with that file!

Serious oddness, anyone have any clues!?

BTW – I know the hardware itself is fine, booting from a Knoppix CD all works fine.

Update: Tried a USB Floppy drive, it is a-ok, tried another usb key (2.0gb PEAK III) and same symptoms.

Thanks,

Karl.
