Windows XP SP2 - USB not functioning correctly

By karlm ·
Hi.

I have an IBM R30 Laptop here which was recently upgraded from windows 2000 to XP Pro, SP2. It has all the latest updates installed, and afaik no viruses or spyware.

Now, the USB was working fine in 2000, but since going to XP Pro, the USB will recognise a Micro$oft Intellimouse, but when the USB Printer is plugged in, it has problems, but more importantly USB Mass Storage devices will not work. XP Pro picks them up via plug and pray, installs them, but does not assign them drive letters. I go into Computer Management, use the storage plugin and assign a drive letter to the usb key (RunDisk) and it says it is formatted as FAT32 and abled to be accessed through drive letter -whatever-. Go into My Computer, no usb key/drive and if I try to access through Computer Management and open through there, it will open. HOWEVER if I try and run it as a drive letter, for example 'e:\', it bombs out and tells me there is no action associated with that file!

Serious oddness, anyone have any clues!?

BTW - I know the hardware itself is fine, booting from a Knoppix CD all works fine.

Update: Tried a USB Floppy drive, it is a-ok, tried another usb key (2.0gb PEAK III) and same symptoms.

Thanks,

Karl.

A Solution?

by Stu In reply to Windows XP SP2 - USB not ...

This is an old one, someone must have found the solution by now surely? However, I now have the same XP SP2 USB2 Mass Storage problem.

Is it something to do with Microsoft's pirating paranoia? If so their idea f a solution is a tad heavy. How can a video Editor live without USB2 Mass storage Firewire? Yes but what about the rest?

I have the Same Problem

by pgadams In reply to Windows XP SP2 - USB not ...

On a new Dell Dimension 9200 when I insert flash drives such as a PNY Attache 1 MB, it is recognized by Plug and Play, and I can see it in Device Manager Disk Management, but I can't access it in File Manager. The same is true for a USB card reader. These devices work on all other computers they have been used on. I have cleared the drive letters so that I have C and D assigned to my 2 SATA hard drives, then the next are X, Y and Z for my 2 SATA DVD drives and a virtual drive. Ant thoughts?

XP SP2 USB mass storage failure

by Stu In reply to I have the Same Problem

Yes, there are many other people out there suffering the same problem - has anybody found the solution though? This is so talked about that Microsoft must know about it and yet how long has SP2 been available and why no patch?

Could it have anything to do with Microsoft's awful firewall or copy protection policy I wonder?

Fix is at jsifaq

by gjcooper1960 In reply to XP SP2 USB mass storage f ...

I fixed this a couple of years ago - search jsifaq for drive letters. There is a registry change where you delete the 'dos' drive letters freeing them up for use. The drives are there - just not visible or usable. As for a microsoft patch, aren't they too busy selling vista as a solution to all problems?
