Windows XP takes long time to shut down?

By tlazarus ·
I recently went through a virus/worm quarantine on my home PC and supposedly it's gone, but now it takes up to 4 minutes before it shuts down. If I boot in safe mode, it will shut down in 8 seconds like it use to before virus/worm showed up. Any recommendations?

May be program running in background

safe mode is a diagnostic with most prorams disabled, so it will close fast.

First, run update and run your virus scanner, then check that no Spyware/adware programs are running. Also check if your virus sw is set to run while you are shutting down.

after this, run msconfig, this will let you stop programs from running one by one to let you diagnose problems like indexing still running.

Good luck.
