windows XP upgrade

when I try useing upgrade version of XP,It askes for a cd of my older version. I have tried win98 and winMe .I bought both these disks and have the key codes for them. However setup tells me that they are not valid.

There will be a 1-800 # for microsoft, in this case I would use it... they provide free support for installs...

have handy:

your license number for the old win version as well as the product code and licent # for the upgrade.

If all the #'s check out, they can give you an unlock code over the phone.

Good point G... check the upgrade requirements... it might only be a 2k or home to pro upgrade, it should specify in the requirements section right on the box.

This should be a straight forward installation but you will need what is currently on your HDD to upgrade from. If you have ME on the HDD then you'll need the ME disc the same applies to 98 or 98SE.

However if you have formated your HDD and it's still not working I would run a wiping utility over the drive to write 0 to every sector and then allow the XP Upgrade CD to format the drive.

If all else fails than it's a phone call to MS for a work around as this is really their problem.
