Windows XP will not boot

By smcdonald1 ·
I recently answered a call for a customer that was having a problem with XP home edition not booting. The OS load would attempt to start on both a cold boot and soft boot. The machine would repeatedly fail to start and in fact would continue to restart. I discussed this problem with fellow workers and we were stumped. Since then, I have seen this problem on 5 other machines. I have a feeling that I am overlooking something extremely trivial. No form of recovery was able to work, i.e. system restore. The machine would not load LKGC or safe mode drivers either. No joy from tech support for each particular machine either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows XP will not boot

Hi,

As a general answer - as its kind of a general question, mostly the crashing will be due to bad drivers.

Alter the BIOS to stop the automatic reboot and see if the screen retains any useful information from the crash.

Cheers,
Tim.

I have found that for some MBs and hardware configurations, XP can be very slot sensitive on where the plug in cards are.
While this has only given me shutdown problems, it is worth looking at.

Back the system down to minimum hardware, and see if you can get things to work from there. Then re-install one card / device at a time until you get an error.

Interestingly, MS recommends setting the Plug and Play OS switch in bios settings to NO.

Another resource to check out is www.aumha.org
In addition to the guides that they have, there are some good resource links.
