      If the disk was using 98’s Disk Space or other compression system, then you can only read it on another 98 computer. You will need to decompress it first before being able to read it. Otherwise the disk contents could be corrupt and will need fixing using chkdsk before being able to read it.

      Check the Floppy Disc’s themselves to make sure that they still work

      Then if everything is OK there replace the Floppy drive in the 98 Machine and rewrite the Floppies then try again to read them in an XP Machine.

      Most times you have this type of problem it’;s the fault of the floppy not being stored correctly but it’s also possible that the old Floppy drive has gone faulty because it hasn’t been used and with the computer running has sucked in a lot of dust and other rubbish that has killed it off. At one real estate office I had to replace every floppy drive because even though they had never been used they all no longer worked as they where full of rubbish.

      After replacing every Floppy Drive and moving the Towers the problem disappeared.
