windows xp x64 setup problem

By c_hill_7 ·
when the win xp setup screen starts to complete the windows installation starts, i get a fatal error message:
Fatal Error:
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
"Untranslatable message, Win32LastError is 14001".

This computer previously had win xp x64 on it. It was having serious log in problems( Windows would black screen upon loadup). I was trying to re-install windows all over again.

I have tried a few times and not been able to

reload Win XP 64 bit edition onto a drive that it had been previously loaded on to until after I had totally wiped the drive, blown away the partition, repartitioned and rebuilt the Master Boot Record. The quickest way I have found to do this is to install Linux and have it **** away the existing partitions and write a new MBR. Then install the XP 64 bit and have it totally **** away the Linux and rebuild the MBR.

It seems a previous installation leaves something hidden on the drive somewhere that causes new rebuilds to have a hernia. I have no idea what or where it is, but it seems the only logical reason for the problem and the extent needed to go to in order to rebuild the system.

got it ~

The first time that I downloaded it over the partitioned section with the same data and etc... It gave me quite a few errors.

Cleared the partitioned area and installed on the same drive and it worked...

That does seem to be the problem. If it is already loaded there, it will act up.
