Windows2000 Pro will not log onto domain

By Daveman ·
One of our clients is running windows 2000 Pro as their only server, the client states he installed MS Excel onto server, rebooted, & now server is giving "The system cannot log you on now because the domain MODEMSRV is not available" message. Thismachine IS the domain, there are no other servers on the network. Machine ALWAYS goes to login screen, even when told to boot into safe mode. none of the workstations can login to the machine either.

1. "One of our clients is running windows 2000 Pro as their only server".
This is strange because Windows 2000 Pro is actually a Workstation, ie neither server nor Domain Controller.

2. Try logging on on the local system account.

3. Check that you enter correct username and password. This can sometimes be wrong because of uppercase-lowercase issues or other keyboard mapping (for example English and German keyboard layouts have y and z keys swapped).

1. Yes, it is strange, but 2000 pro CAN act as a domain controller

2. There ISN'T an option for local account.

3. That was the very first thing i checked.

But thanks for your response anyway.

Hi Daveman. Same thing happened to me recently. Seems that the high encryption functionalty can get hosed pretty easily, and this causes Win2000 to lose the ability to authenticate any logons.

Check MS article Q244671 for information on solving this annoyance:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q244/6/71.ASP

In the end, I had to follow the instructions to copy the registry onto a floppy disk and modify it at another machine.
