Windows95b will not shutdown.

By orosas ·
I have an hp vectra pc P133. I have formated the drive and reinstalled windows 95b. After installing the OS, I updated the bios, after rebooting the computer and doing a restart or shutdown, the computer just hangs on the screen that displays (Pleasewait while your computer shuts down) and it never shutdown. I need to manully shut it off,When i power on the cpu it runs scandisk because it displays a message that the computer was not properly shut down.

First of all, this is a very common problem with most microsoft OS, and most people just ignore it; you can skip out of scandisk by pressing "x" and then spacebar to resume startup. However, if you want to troubleshoot it, try pressing Ctrl-Alt-delwhile your computer is running and try clicking the SHut DOwn button from there to see if it still hangs; when you shut down from there it closes all the programs and services before ending the windows session. If it hangs before windows begins shutting down, it's not windows, but another program. Whether it hangs or not, look at the programs that are running in the Ctrl-Alt-Del task manager. If you have any DOS based programs such as screensaver customizers, maybe an old version of Norton or something that run on your computer, these may not shut down until after windows, causing problems. Also check what you have running in the same place right before you're going to shut down. If there is anything other than just windows files there, make sure the program is closed out before shutting down.

Microsoft has a fix for this. It works on Win95 and Win98. It is a quick install, and will fit on a 1.44mb diskette. We have put the fix out on our network in a shared area so both techies can access it from any PC on the network.

Try to boot into safe mode, then shut down.
Did it shut down OK?
If yes then its a driver issue,
Check all devices and update all drivers.
