By afontana ·
how can i get my 20gb western digital drive to not cause windows98 to boot in MS-DOS compatibility mode? Microsoft are working on an update for esdi_506.pdr, but i need this fix NOW ! The problem is that win98 can't handle a secondary hard drive >8gb - (!!!)

One option would be to update the current BIOS by flashing an upgrade, the other option would be to use the drive setup soft ware and load the bios options, that will enable the bios to register a larger size.

I think you need to upgrade your bios. Microsoft told you about this limitation?
I have a 30 GIG as my primary and a 20 GIG as my secondary. I don't think there is any problem.

Hi!

Had the same problem but I upgraded to use FAT32 and then problem was out of the world. Check your BIOS. If it report it to be the actual size (give or take a MB) then its FAT 32 you need. Otherwise its BIOSflash.

Last resort if BIOS is correct is to use fdisk and activate largedisks.

BTW. Change your cabeling to have the secondary disk as slave or if its so as MAster on secondary port if you cant solve the problem.

win98 CAN handle secondary drive (slave), but your problem is bios related, not win98. I have had the exact experiance you state. My 'cure' was to fdisk the western digital drive with msn fdisk, not the 'data lifeguard' tool supplied by western digital, choosing one partition and make active, then running format from win 98 or win 98SE.Load operating sys & reboot. You'll get 'hard disk failure' (bios can't see drive) press F1 and boot from floppy. complete install. Each time you boot, need to F1 for start, otherwise works ok. All 20 gig available. No real cure without bios replace/upgrade. good luck.

Sounds like the partitioning on the slave is corrupted.

Plug the drive in as master

Boot up with a win98 boot disk

fdisk the drive with large disk support enabled

reboot to floppy
format the drive
check the drive size

switch the drive back to slave and boot into windows.
