Comctl32.dll is updated with the Office 2000' install.
You will receive the error if Comctl32.dll was not successfully updated during the Office 2000' install.

Just a guess, but here goes...comctl32.dll file is used by a bunch of the executables in the Win OS. Maybe there was a program running on the pc that had that file in use when the office 2k installer was trying to write new copy of that file to drive. If you try installing office again, I would ctrl-alt-del and manually kill anything besides explorer that is running before attempting re-install. May also want to check properties of existing comctl32.dll file to make sure it is not set to read only. I know this shouldn't really matter to the installer program (should prompt to overwrite), but I have seen office 2000 and it's service pack do some goofy stuff while installing. Good luck!
