Windows98SE installation lock

By Tracer ·
In the process of reinstalling Windows98 SE, I'm having the same problem happen over and over on five different machines.
The installation will lock up directly after the Setup Wizard screen. At this point, one of two things will happen: One, a black box will appear mid-screen and the mouse will freeze. Two, the system will reboot. On one occasion, an error said the hard drive was locked.
Any suggestions?

Are you sure that all anti-virus, and anything else running under dos, are disabled? You may want to try the Microsoft instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q250/9/28.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0, Article Number Q250928, "How to Reinstall Microsoft Windows 98." If you are reinstalling from windows, try setting the display adapter to standard VGA. Once you re-set the display type to one of the Widows Standard types, re-boot and try again. The Microsoft article also links to info on how to install from dos, this may work for you.

Thanks, Harold. I think I've got it working now.
