Windows98SE Re-Install

I was having problems connecting to the
internet through my Lynksys. After checking
my other pc and seeinf that I could connect
without any problem. I re- checked all of the
settings on the problem pc and still could not
connect to the internet. I re-installed Win98SE
and now I can not get my setting to go above
16bit. What would lock the setting up so that it
could not be changed. I NEED 800X600 and I
have no idea of how to get to the settings.
