it is not letting me repair the problem with the windows cd.... the r dosesn't appear

You cannot reinstall (repair or in-place upgrade) Windows if Registry is indeed corrupted or damaged as your statement suggested.

1. Run CHKDSK /R from Recovery Console. This is to check and repair if the Windows File System got corrupted. If this does not resolve the problem, do a HD diagnostic test. If it failed, replace the HD.

2. Follow the procedure in (How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting). This is basically to boot Windows to the original (i.e. when Windows was first installed) and do System Restore manually. This means that if the System Restore had been turned off, this method would not work because there were no System Restore points to restore.

3. If you still have the problem, backup data and clean install Windows.

Backup data before you try Step 2. If Step 2 fails, your data may be lost.

If you have to do a reinstall after backing up all your data run a wiping utility over the HDD to totally blow away all traces of the previous installation Something like Boot & Nuke is ideal
