    Windowx XP Format/Install fails

    Locked

    by sudesh_kumar ·

Trying to install XP Pro service on a 2 years old PC, with a new SATA drive.
    (1) How do I provide the driver (it is on CD)?
The computer has no floppy drive.
    (2) Switched to a IDE drive. It failed at the end of format step. Tried two other drives. It still fails. The disks are working fine on other computers.
    (3) Formatted the drive on another computer, started the installation without format. It failed after few minutes with “Incorrect Function xxx” error.

    Help!

It is most likely due to RAM(s).

Do a RAM test – http://tinyurl.com/7n63v (MS OCA) and http://tinyurl.com/3jnpy (UBCD)

If you still have the problem, test CPU and then MB if necessary – http://tinyurl.com/3jnpy (UBCD)

For SATA driver, it is in the motherboard CD. Typically it allows you to install the driver in a floppy. Read the manual.
Windows XP has some PnP SATA driver included. You may not need to provide the driver.
Otherwise, either you have to install a floppy drive temporarily and hit F6 during Windows installation or to make a slipstreamed Windows XP CD that you incorporated the driver.
