win.ini error message

By solido_at ·
I've have this error message displayed when boot to windows 98. "could not load or run 'setup.exe' specified in the win.ini file, make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the win.ini file.

what causes this problem & it's affecting the connection to the internet.

If I extract the win.ini file from DOS & replaces it, will it solve the problem?

The Win.INI file is just a text file. You can open it with Notepad/Wordpad. Look for the lines that say Run= and Load=.

First, you cannot extract the win.ini file and replace it. If you remove it, Windows will not start.

run sysedit from your run box.

This will bring up all files that windows is using to boot from. Close down to the file that say WIN.INI in the top left box. Look for a line that says run or load "setup.exe". It may have a drive letter and directory in front of it, similar to C:\norton\setup.exe. Just delete the line. Save the file and then exit. Reboot. This should fix you up.

Regards,

Paul.

I've seen this happen when uninstalling InoculateIT that comes free with the Gozilla download application. Just reinstall that or the other anti-virus program you removed, if that's the case.
