WinLogon.exe-applic error on SP3

By calans ·
I was doing a SP3 install on my Dell Laptop. During the SP3 install I got an error and the laptop rebooted..never finished the install.

It now won't log-on. I don't even get to any log-in screen. I get a WinLogon.exe application error and it hangs up with the blue screen.

The application error says The exception Privileged instruction (0x0000096) occurred in the application at location 0x00076aa0.

WinLogon.exe-applic error on SP3

by anthonyjames1 In reply to WinLogon.exe-applic error ...

I can offer only 2 suggestions for you.
( 1 )When booting up go into safe mode and select last known good configuration.
( 2 ) If you made a system recovery disc then this will bring your system back. If you did you will need your windows 2k cd and foloow the instructions for recovering your original system files. Hope this helps. P.S. I am not looking for any points, just trying to help.

WinLogon.exe-applic error on SP3

Sorry in my haste I mentioned going into safe mode. What I ment was to bott up your sytem and hit the F8 key while booting to get the boot menu and select last known good configuration.

If that does not work then I would insert the windows 2k cdand follow the system reocovery process. If you made a system recovery disc this will work. I cannot express enough how important under windows 2k this disk is. I have restored several systems to operating condition WITHOUT reformatting and reinstalling everything.

Ok another suggestion
insert windows 2k cd and select repair. this will install the system files directly from the cd.

Calans

It would be most helpfull if you also list all yor attempts to solve this problem so that you do not get imformation you have tried.
I tested corrections on 3 pc's and had no trouble restoring system files.
What I also did was boot into safe mode and uninstalled the sp3 update and that also worked. You did not mention if you had trouble booting up into safe mode. I wish you luck. Please give as much info as u can as many people here will help you.

WinLogon.exe-applic error on SP3

by calans In reply to WinLogon.exe-applic error ...

I'm sorry about not mentioning all of the steps I tried. Some of them were after I submitted my original question. I never was able to get into Windows in any mode to try to uninstall SP3, even though I never got through the installation.

Yes, booting up in all 3 of the various SAFE modes still got me the same error. I tried repairing from the 2000 cd and that too said it was successful, but still gave me the same error. I also said I tried copying the winlogon.exe from the 2000 cd and that also was no luck.

Thanks for all of your help!
