WinME 31/2 to 51/4 need it back to 31/2

By isangbala ·
We have a PC running WinME, the floppy change from 31/2 to 51/4, and can not change back to 31/2. I think this happened when we tried to use external HP colorado back-up tape that did not work. We have unistalled colorado but still same.Tried disable floppy in BIOS then reboot, renable 31/2 1.44 then reboot same. Any idea?

Enter System Properties. (right click on My Computer, select properties)
Click on Performance.
Under floppy drives, make sure that the box to check for new floppy drives is checked.

Click on the device manager tab.
Remove the floppy drive itself from Device Manager.

Re-Boot, and verify that the floppy is in fact set to 3 1/2" in BIOS settings.

Windows should find the new drive and install it properly as a 1.44 3 1/2" drive.

Done that before, still same. Do have a message stating "Drive A Using MSDos Compatibility mode" in "Performance".

Thanks for the additional information.

I wonder if the installer for the tape drive damaged or disabled your chip-set IDE driver.

I would start by downloading and installing the latest drivers for the chip-set on your motherboard.
