    WinMe Boot Recovery

    Locked

    by shadoglare ·

In an attempt to dual-boot I loaded the boot-loader XOSL on my WinMe box, which seemed to work fine… but the dual-boot didn’t work as planned so I thusly tried to remove the new boot-loader….
Did an fdisk /mbr… and was the greeted with a “missing operating system” error on boot. So I then tried the tried-and-true method of running “sys c:”….
    No luck… same error…
What am I missing here? Is there some trick to booting WinMe that is different from 95/98?

FDISK /MBR removed the bootable partition by restoring a fat 32 Master Boot record.

Your boot partition was at one time occupied by XOSL, now it’s probably just a miniscule, unbootable partition.

Try Partition Magic. Inexpensive, and very veryflexible.

Otherwise, do a full system restore.

      Good Luck

Turns out my problem wasn’t with the boot sector – it had installed it’s own version of the MS boot files on the DOS partition – for some reason the sys command didn’t clear up the problem, but manually copying the files over from a boot disk did the trick.
