WinNT to 2K Server Migration Disaster

By cyberroc ·
So the company buys an NT server for a different department, Not the one I am used to supporting and decides to migrate the server to 2K. Department support quits and they bring me in to see what happened... I now know why I like Novell servers, butdo not have much of a choice but to learn the 2K. Help is sooo appreciated and here is some of what I am getting::::
The DNS server was unable to complete directory service enumeration of zone (server) This DNS server is configured to use information obtained from Active Directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and repeat enumeration of the zone. The event data contains the error.
DNS server has updated its own host (A) records. In order to insure that its DS-integrated peer DNS servers are able to replicate with this server, an attempt was made to update them with the new records through dynamic update. An error was encountered during this update, the record data is the error code.
if this DNS server does not have any DS-integrated peers, then this error should be ignored.
If this DNS server's ActiveDirectory replication partners do not have the correct IP address(es) for this server, they will be unable to replicate with it.
If this DNS server does not have any DS-integrated peers, then this error should be ignored.
If I am not mistaken that the Replication or something is trying to take place sometime around 12 noon and some users loose connection at that time and others have problems first thing logging on. I am assuming it has something to do with the NT to 2K migration, I am guessing the DNS holds the answer and I will need to do some work in the Active directory and/or the DNS manager, but I am doomed as I am flying blind into this problem. With very little knowlege in the area all the help I can get will save my life... Detail is a welcomed friend...

WinNT to 2K Server Migration Disaster

by BeerMonster In reply to WinNT to 2K Server Migrat ...

Hi,
In order to get to the root of this problem, I need to know what role the server is filling. If, as I suspect - hope I'm wrong, the server was previously a backup domain controller for an existing domain then you have got big problems. A windows 2000 dc CANNOT operate correctly in an NT4 domain UNLESS the primary domain controller has itself been upgraded to 2000. THE PDC MUST ALWAYS BE THE FIRST NT4 DOMAIN CONTROLLER UPGRADED. The 2000 replication model is multi master, which means that updates can be made on any 2000 DC, and those updates will be replicated to all other DC's - TOTALLY different from the NT4 model. It sound like your server thinks it's in a 2000 domain - but isn't. If this is not the case then things may not be sobad. Reject this message, and give the required info as a comment.....

So here it goes, to make a long story short I first apologize to BeerMonster for not responding, after working on the server for a solution, I was in need of some off the SYSTEM time. Here is what was found in the mess of a server. There were numerous problems in the configurations. For example the first two strings of the suffix was backwards in the DNS, the last string of the Server IP address was off by 2 numbers and quite a bit of information was trying to access a secondary NIC that was not even connected. This is just some of what came about, I cannot imagine what the prior was thinking or drinking when they set all of this up. Thanks for the inf. and I guess next time I will take a better look at what is what prior to asking... All services and systems are working, as they wanted them to...
