WinNT Workstation 4 Won't Print!

By kermit ·
I have five computers on an NT domain network. It is a pure IP network. Two computers run NT Workstation 4 service pack 4 one runs NT server 4 with lastest service pack and two windows 98 computers. The two NT 4 Workstation computers have laserjet printers. One will not print. I have booted the computer to MS-DOS and tested the port by using: dir >LPT1. This produce a print out. So I ruled out it being a port problem. I can add the printer in Control Panel and I do not get any error messages BUT no matter what I do in Windows, it refuses to print. Any help and I would be VERY grateful.

WinNT Workstation 4 Won't Print!

Hi.

There are really 3 factors to look at when it comes to printing in NT 4.

The first is the LPT port. Ensure that the resources assigned to the LPT port are the same under NT, as they are in the BIOS. If these values differ, the port will not function. Check the event viewer for errors relating to the LPT (Parallel) port. Have you attached another printer to the port to see if the other printer works? If it does, then at least you know that the configuration of the port is correct.

The second is the printer driver. Have you removed and re-installed the driver for the printer? Are you using the latest version of the driver? Is the driver you are loading the correct driver for the printer you are installing?

The third is the NT spool service. There have been some major problems with the spooler service in the early versions of NT service packs. I know that this is the most obvious answer to give, but why not install a later service pack? At least it will isolate further where the problem lies if you install it, and printing still does not work! Eliminating possible causes in this sort of scenario is very important. Also make sure that the spooloer service is actually started and running.

If the printer is working fine in DOS, then there is a 99% chance that looking at these 3 issues above will sort out your problem.

I hope this helps.
Regards.
Duwane.
