WINS

By ninoem ·
I have two domains. Neither domain is using windows 2000 active directory. However, in domain XX I have NT servers and 98/95 machines that use a Windows NT 4.0 WINS server. In domain OO I have some Windows 2000 servers and some windows 2000 clients and I have a windows 2000 WINS server.

Question: How do I make the windows NT WINS server talk to the windows 2000 WINS server? (i.e. have them do a push/pull between each other?)

Although Microsoft Windows 2000-based clients will be able to use a WINS server, they won't require it. Microsoft Windows 2000 will replace WINS with a new service called Dynamic DNS. Dynamic DNS will dynamically resolve host names and NetBIOS names. However, Dynamic DNS will require you to run a DHCP server. Therefore, if you don't have a DHCP server, you will need to have one. In domain xx1,s in Advanced TCP/IP settings set the primary wins server's ip address to the ip address of the wins serverxx1 and the secondary wins server's ip address to wins serveroo1. In domain oo1(win2000 servers) add the ip addresses of the two wins servers in advanced TCP/IP settings, making sure domain oo1 WINS SERVER'S ip address is listed first. Don't forget to set the scope options 044 WINS/NBNS ans 046 WINS/NBT in dhcp properties for both domains. Also set one of them as pull and the other one as push in the WINS server properties. I hope this gets you going. If you have any issues, let me know.

WINS is not dead in w2k, it is updated .
Yes you should do an Push/Pull configuration, but configure each WINS-Server to accept updates from any Server then it should work properly.

Agreed, Frobo. Also, WINS2000 does not require DHCP. I have a very similar situation and push\pull replication works fine (without DHCP). You must allow updates from any server, though, as Frobo mentioned.
