WINS and DHCP

By andrewras ·
I was wondering if a NT4 workstation will pick up a WINS adress automatically via DHCP or does the WINS adress for a NT4 workstation client have to be put in manually, I have noticed that the WIN 2k clients will pick up the new WINS adress from the DHCP but the NT4 clients will not

You set the WINS server address in the scope options for your DHCP server (option 044 WINS/NBNS Servers). Also remember to set your node type to hybrid (option 046 WINS/NBT Node Type).

A workstation will ignore any DHCP options if the setting is configured manually on the workstation. So, if your workstations already have the WINS server address configured statically in their TCP/IP settings, then they will ignore the DHCP setting. Also, the new DHCP setting will not be picked up until the workstation renews its DHCP lease, so this could affect the timing of any changes on the workstations as well. First, check that there is no static setting for WINS, then go to a commandprompt and type ipconfig /renew to ensure that the new DHCP setting is picked up on the workstation immediately. Hope this helps!
