WINS and DNS

By jorge.gonzalez ·
We can not see the local users when browsing the Network places, our site connects to the only DC (DNS server) through a T1, we have an NT on our site running only WINS.

Every workstation is W2k PRO, with the DNS pointing to the DC on the remote site and WINS to the local server.

It looks like the Workstations are'nt getting the update from the WINS properly.

WINS server event log shows EVENT ID 3013 is the redirector creating this problem?.

What can cause the local PC's not show (connectivity is ok if pc is specfied)

any comments are appreciated

Check your Network Properties settings on the W2K PRO PC's, specifically the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks service must be installed. Go to My Network Places, Properties, Current Network Connection, Properties, Install, Service,Add, Select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network, click OK or Add. Also check that Client for Microsoft Networks is a component of the network configuration on the client.

Happy Trails.... ElvisTie

Is your DC NT4 or Win2000? If the DC is NT4, then you will need a WINS server at the same site as the DC. The remote systems will need to know where the WINS Server is. NT4 does not use DNS to authenticate, but your W2K Pro are expecting DNS. In this case, WINS at the DC site will be necessary. A WINS server at the remote site, which is replicating to the other may be a help.

If your DC is a Windows 2000 server, then you will need to make certain DNS is being read at the remote site. WINS server, again may be the answer.

I only offer this information for you to consider.
