WINS appropiates of a phantom IP number

By mike_m ·
- NT4.0 SP6 server
- WINS was up and running as everuthing else
- Had to change server's LAN CARD, and redo TCP-IP setups (identical to previous), which is:
-TCP-IP address, mask and gateway
-No DHCP
-WINS primary and secondary both pointing toitself on server PC

Upon restarting, network works fine, I checked WINS mapping and found out that PDC/WINS server is known as 1.9.0.184, which is non-existent and not in same domain nor mask

Deleted WINS SERVER and entered correct one, and:
-If I enter PDC name it comes up as NAME(1.9.0.184)
-If I enter IP it comes up twice, with same name, correct IP and same name with phantom IP.

-Same phantom IP also appears on Replication Partners

Stopped service, deleted all of WINS folder, restarted service and immeditely the phantom number appears.

Repeated procedure with no-network (to check if it came from another rep partner) and result is exactly the same.
It is not in HOSTS nor LMHOSTS, does not appear in NBTSTAT, and does not reply to pinging.

Network is working, but first access is sometimes sluggish, and occasionally loses connection to some branch. Login is fine.
Anybody has an answer or a way to clear it?
Thank you
Mike

WINS appropiates of a phantom IP number

Hello,

I would check the potential client-pcs and the server for a second IP assignment.

For NT4 look at settings/network/tcp-ip/advanced.

WINS appropiates of a phantom IP number

by mike_m In reply to WINS appropiates of a pha ...

Sorry, nothing there expet correct and valid IP number.
The proble appears to be right on PDC, since it happend also shutting PDC down, rebooting with no network (also no cable at all), stop the service, delete the entire WINS database, restarting the service. Database i empty, as I add PDC on WINS servers it appears twice: with correct IP and with "phamtom IP". It also appears twice in Replication Partners. I think I'll have to remove WINS service and reinstall, but hate to do so. Mike

WINS appropiates of a phantom IP number

tried this
on the pdc create a entries for wins and follows this article below
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;135405.
I had not tried this solution but I believe it will work. I ran into the same problem and I had rebuild the pdc not just for this but other problem as well.

WINS appropiates of a phantom IP number

Sorry, it didn't work. I'd HATE to rebuild a WORKING PDC.
I tried uninstalling WINS, deleting WINS folder, Boot an reinstall. Same thing. as soon as I enter Wins server name or IP it assigns 1.9.0.184. This parameter also appears in registry, in WINS ADMIN TOOL\CACHE. I thought I had it and deleted it. It reappears immediately as soon as I CLOSE Winsadmin, with or without any operation on it.
